Rita M. Hughes, age 72 passed away peacefully on Friday, October 28, 2022 at her home in Bethany Beach, Delaware. She was born May 25, 1950 in West Chester, PA.
She was predeceased by parents, George and Avalon Davis. Sisters, Katie Best and Bonnie Eller and daughter Wendy Seldomridge.
She is survived by husband, David Hughes, of Bethany Beach, daughter, Kimberly Seldomridge-Walls (Nicholas Walls) of Wilmington, daughter Kristen Smith of Bethany Beach, beloved grandson, Cooper Smith of Bethany Beach, nieces Cathy Eller, Tabitha King, Rebecca Dower, great niece, Katelyn Claycomb, and great nephew, Alexander King.
She worked several years for Dr. Christopher Donoho Jr. of Newark, Delaware and recording secretary for the House of Representatives at Legislative Hall in Dover, Delaware.
Rita was a graduate of Kennett High School in 1968 and was active in sports during her high school career. After high school she attended Goldey Beacom and received an Associate's degree. She lived in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain with her husband for many years. Upon her return to the States, she became an active volunteer for animal rescue. She has been a passionate and dedicated volunteer and campaigner for the Democratic Party in her state. A moment of pride was when she was selected to become a delegate for the Democratic party for the state of Delaware in the last presidential election which brought her much joy. She was a lifelong supporter of Joe Biden.
Rita was beloved by her family and many friends. She was a wonderful mother, wife, aunt, grandmother, sister, and friend. She was smart, loving, and had a wicked sense of humor. One of the greatest joys and loves of her life was spending time with her grandson, Cooper; he was the light in her eye. She loved spending time with her family and her friends. She loved to travel, experience different cultures and meet new people. She could find out your whole life story within five minutes of meeting you.
She was kind and generous, and willing to give a helping hand to anyone who was in need. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
A celebration of life will be held Sunday, November 20, 2022 to 1-4 pm at Millville fire hall in Millville, Delaware. For those who would like to share and remember stories of Rita, please be prepared as we would like to hear them.
In lieu of flowers, the families suggest donations to the Juvenile Diabetic Research Foundation, JDRF. We would like to extend a special thank you to the Bethany Beach Fire Department and the Sussex County paramedics.
